Alvar Aalto

(1898-1976)
about-me

In 1925, at the age of twenty-seven, Alvar Aalto called for a sauna to be built on the hill above downtown Jyväskylä. The suggestion was made in an article he wrote for the local newspaper.

Aalto wanted to see a cultural sauna, a monument that would sit above his hometown like a temple.

"Rakentakaame sinne sauna! Ei tavallisen vanhan suomalaisen saunan irvikuva, kuten kaikki saunamme tätä nykyä ovat, vaan kultuurisauna, kansallismonumentti, ensimmäinen laatuaan, Suomen heräävässä sivistyksessä"
Alvar Aalto, Keski-Suomalainen 22.01.1925

"...the sauna should be like a temple.."
